Fil-Am players eyed for RP women's basket team (12:14 p.m.)

SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) mulled the recruitment of Filipino-American players to be part of Philippine women’s team for the Southeast Asian Basketball (Seaba) championships in June.

“We think that there are some very good Fil-Americans that can beef up our team at least in terms of size,” said SBP executive director Noli Eala.

Eala said one of SBP’s goals is to win the women’s title in Seaba, which will be hosted by Manila this year.

“We have never won the Seaba women’s championship. This is one of our goals in the SBP… If not this year, at least until our term in 2012,” he said.

Eala said the SBP has already kicked off its preparations for the tournament, which may be participated by 11 Southeast Asian nations. The Philippine women’s team is currently under the tutelage of coach Heidi Ong, he said.

“We are hoping to create a try-out for Fil-Americans... We are looking to do that sometime in April so by June, they will have enough time to prepare for the national team.” he said. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
