New look, same passion

SUNSTAR Davao has been telling Davao Region’s stories of struggles and successes for 23 years and is committed to continue chronicling amid digital disruption and media evolution.

It has come a long way from the time it first came out as a bi-weekly publication on December 16, 1985 under the original name Peryodiko Dabaw (SuSStar Davao including its Peryodiko Dabaw days has been in the industry for nearly 33 years). It became a daily newspaper on September 7, 1987 and eventually bought by Sun.Star Publishing Inc. in 1995, thus the birth of Sun.Star Davao.

Through the years, Sun.Star Davao cemented its presence in the region and became the leading content provider here as reflected to its multiple prestigious awards and army of loyal readers and followers.

Fast forward today, Sun.Star Davao has made a name not just as a credible source of information but also as a responsible institution guided by its corporate and journalistic ethical standards.

For its 23 years, Sun.Star Davao embarked on another innovative move with the launch of its new look last August 8, 2018 featuring a compact with an impact layout.

The new Sun.Star Davao is now handy, more versatile, more visually appealing, advertiser-friendly, and allows better storytelling.

Sun.Star Management Inc. President Gina Garcia-Atienza said the major changes made are designed to make it more interesting to the readers.

“It’s easier on the eyes because of its modern, visually appealing design. It will target a broader audience by having shorter stories supported by larger photos and infographics,” SunStar Media Group President Julius G. Neri Jr., for his part said.

Sun.Star Davao general manager Tessie Alcoriza also highlighted how the new design offers advertisers with wide range of advertising options.

“Advertisers will no longer be restricted to limited ad sizes as modular advertising allows advertisers to visualize their ads clearly, therefore invest wisely. We design it this way to satisfy latest readership preferences, it is cleaner, clutter-free, thus improving the experience of the readers which is good for the advertising,” Alcoriza said.

Sun.Star Davao acting editor-in-chief Reuel John Lumawag also vowed to tell more stories focused in the community.

Sun.Star Davao does not stop with the redesign as a response to the changing media landscape. With the launch of the new look, the content provider also embraced a digital newsroom with a team focused on telling community stories and entertainment through social media and reporters trained to do “digital first” reporting, but still, maintaining journalistic discipline.

The medium may change but the discipline will remain and Sun.Star Davao is here to stay to be in every person’s consciousness and success.
