REIGNING National Shell Active kiddies champion David Rey Ancheta of Corpus Christi High School played through undefeated to lead the Cagayan de Oro chess qualifiers to the 2018 City Division Meet in October.
Ancheta, seeking to qualify for the second-straight year in Palarong Pambansa, delivered a perfect 5 of 5 performance in the Swiss system tourney to tow the South District elimination in the company of Timothy Mutia of Oro Christian Grace School.
Mutia actually tied with Corpus bet Charles Gabing at 3.5 points, but the former emerged with the better tiebreak results to also qualify.
Both Palaro veteran Lorebina Carrasco II and Gwen Escarda of Corpus Christi made a 1-2 finish to hurdle the qualifier in secondary girls rivalry.
“We’re so happy to become overall champion in South District Chess Meet kay naka-survive sab ang duha sa elementary,” said CCS assistant coach Jeany Ancheta.
In the recent South District Meet held at the 2nd floor of South City Central School, the pair of Marion Erx Daabay of Xavier University Grade School and Maria Elisabeth Panes of Camaman-an Elementary School topped the elementary boys’ and girls’ competitions to be the first to advance alongside second placers Djokovic Rosales and Jameela Macatoon of Corpus Christi Grade School.
