Women in sports

GOOD day, all!

I’m writing this before the Asian Games have ended. And although I was very saddened by the result of our basketball team in Jakarta, I ended up being very proud of our Filipino athletes who performed in Jakarta. We had several gold medals from our women athletes: from golf, taekwondo, weightlifting and even skateboarding!

Of course, other women athletes like Lydia De Vega and Elma Muros have paved the way for the success of our current crop of Filipina athletes. There is more yet to be done for Women’s Sports in the Philippines; the more girls that engage in sports, the more women we will have who have discipline, perseverance and other traits that have been developed over time competing.

How do we get more girls to play sports:

  1. Remove the stigma of girls playing sports.
  2. Get more quality instruction from female coaches. It’s always easier for them to relate to each other.
  3. Offer more avenues for participation and competition for our women athletes.
  4. Invest more in women’s sports.
  5. Make it as fun and enjoyable for them as possible.
