23 win medals in international math contest

A TOTAL of 23 mathletes from the Davao City team brought home awards from international mathematics competition from May to September this year.

During the flag ceremony at the City Hall on Monday, September 10, 2018, Ricky Ison, the coordinator of Mathematics Trainer’s Guild (MTG) Philippines, bared the names of the kids from different schools in Davao City who competed in Hongkong, China, Thailand, Jakarta and Singapore.

The most recent was the Hongkong International Mathematics Olympiad (HKIMO) 2018 held last September 1 with silver medallion winners Zuleika Lou Dalian, Mervin Dalian and Hanne Margaret Tongcua of Precious International School of Davao (PISD).

Nina Gianna Felix of PISD won bronze; Karol Josef and Simon Jover Acelar of Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) both copped silvers; Josephine Torreña of PISD got a bronze; Belissa Fracheska Te of Addu clinched gold; Chelsea Kristanna Tan of Davao Christian High School salvaged a bronze, Cassidy Kyler Tan with a silver; Mary Grace Espino of Philippine Science High School- Southern Mindanao campus captured a gold as Clarissa Lois Dalian pocketed a bronze.

“On behalf of Mayor Sara, and from all of us, thank you for studying your lessons very well and for making your parents proud and most importantly, thank you for making Davao City a champion in the field of mathematics,” city administrator lawyer Zuleika Lopez said.

Some 28 countries participated in the recent event.

Meanwhile, Ison said that the kids who are still in Grade 1 to 8 are not deprived of their childhood even with intense Math training.

“Actually, they are still kids. They still play. But of course, there are strengths that we have to hone more in them,” he said.
