Audit of economic enterprise office’s records sought

THE Iloilo City Council has passed a resolution that tasked the Internal Service Audit Office to audit the books or records of the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) to determine the financial status of slaughterhouse and markets.

Councilor R Leone Gerochi, during the City Council’s regular session on September 11, raised the resolution to “determine with uncertainty the financial status of the markets, as well as the slaughterhouse.”

“This resolution is asking not only for audit of the books but also for analysis as to probably, are we spending so much on this expense?” Gerochi said.

The Council has conducted several hearings to discuss the situation of the LEEO, as it encountered a number of difficulties due to its low quality of facilities and lack of rehabilitation budget for the slaughterhouse and markets.

Gerochi said the audit will allow the council to “give some sort of advice” on “how to spend the money properly within each department.”

“So considering that this department has already been created, we might as well put it into good news by having it audit,” he said.

He added that the audit will help them develop, operate and provide solutions to the problem of the departments and LEEO.

Councilor Mandrie Malabor, the council’s chairman for markets and slaughterhouse, said Gerochi's resolution will bolster the legislative inquiry being conducted by Councilor Armand Parcon regarding the “sorry state” of the city’s abattoir and public markets. (SunStar Philippines)
