MANILA (Updated) -- The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) announced on Thursday, September 13, the cancellation of several flights to and from the provinces expected to be battered by Typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut).

Typhoon Ompong entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday afternoon, September 12.
As of 10 a.m. Thursday, September 13, it was spotted at 725 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, packing maximum winds of 205 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center and gusts of up to 255 km/h.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Ompong has slightly slowed down while moving westward.
Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 1 has been hoisted over Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan group of Islands, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Isabela, Benguet, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Quezon inc. Polillo Island, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Burias and Ticao island.
Pagasa said Ompong is expected to badly hit the provinces in extreme northern Luzon.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Limuel Noblefranca, operations officer of Philippine Coast Guard Bicol, said that as of 8 a.m. Thursday, over 500 passengers were stranded in several ports in Bicol.
He said 30 passengers were stranded in San Pascual, Masbate; 18 in Pasacao, Camarines Sur; 116 in Tabaco City, Albay; 45 in Bulan, Sorsogon; and 298 in Matnog, Sorsogon.
At least 37 rolling cargoes and four motorized vessels were also stranded.
Noblefranca said sea vessels are no longer allowed to venture out of their province due to rough seas. (SunStar Philippines)
