Sungduan: Barber

MEN and boys back in the 90’s in Baguio City who were customers of Barber Batac Barbershop at Magsaysay Avenue and Abano Barbershop at Abanao Road in Baguio City might be wondering where their favorite barbers now.

Does the name Freddie Malopig, the most sought-after barber back in 1990 to 2006 still ring a bell? He now resides in Brisbane, Australia and manages his own barbershop named FM’s Mens Hairdresser.

It was in year 2006 when he migrated in Australia with his family as a skilled worker. But before even starting his own business he underwent training at Fades and Hair Art Design.

His trainer said learning the techniques in barbering will take some time. But with his impressive experience and skills, he just finished his training in an hour and given the needed certificate.

Putting up his business was not also that difficult. Together with his wife and support of friends he was able to raise the start-up funding for his shop.

In just three months his business became a household name attracting different clients even those who still need to drive several hours just to avail the services of his shop.

Despite being away from home he still embraces the Filipino culture such as the culture of helping. Apart from being active in community service where he provides free barbering services to cancer patients in one center in their community, he also helps fellow Filipinos in need of help.

“Those who just arrived here, I help them like in giving free haircut,” he said.

Whatever advance learning learned in his profession, he also would like to impart it to the place where he started his career. That’s the reason why he opened Freddie Fresh Barbershop in the City of Baguio on September 7.

Barbering runs in his family. His father was a barber and now his daughter is also as certified barber and hairdresser in Australia.

“This is my first job and definitely will also be my last profession,” he said.

They always say that in achieving success and finding happiness in your profession, you need to know what your passion is. There is no difficult job if you are happy with what you are doing.
