TYPHOON Ompong (Mangkhut) has slightly weakened after it made landfall in Baggao, Cagayan around 1:40 a.m. Saturday, September 15.

Several areas remained under storm signals though, with the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, and Babuyan Group of Islands still under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) 4.

TCWS Number 3 was raised over Cagayan, Batanes, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ifugao, and northern Isabela.

TCWS Number 2 was hoisted over southern Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Zambales, Quirino, Pampanga, Bulacan, and northern Quezon including Polillo Island.

TCWS Number 1 remained hoisted over Bataan, Rizal, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, rest of Quezon, and Lubang Island.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said stormy weather is still expected over the areas under TCWS 2, ,3 and 4.

It added that the southwest monsoon (habagat) enhanced by the typhoon will bring gusty winds with occasional moderate to heavy rains over Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, ARMM, Mimaropa and Bicol Region while scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains over Eastern and Central Visayas.

"Residents in these areas, especially those living near river channels, in low-lying areas and in mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and to continue monitoring for updates," it said in its 8 a.m. advisory.

Pagasa also warned residents in Ilocos Norte against possible storm surge with a height of up to six meters, and up to two meters in Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan.

It said that as of 7 a.m. Saturday, the eye of Typhoon Ompong was located in the vicinity of Kabugao, Apayao, with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center and gusts of up to 305 km/h.

The typhoon was forecast to move west at 30 km/h. (LMY/SunStar Philippines)
