THE delegates from Cebu in the Batang Pinoy National Championships took all the safety measures as strong winds and heavy downpour brought by Typhoon “Ompong” struck Baguio City.

Baguio City, Benguet was under Storm Signal No. 3 just as Typhoon “Ompong” made a landfall in Cagayan and threatened most of Northern Luzon dawn yesterday. The strong winds and heavy rains were felt the whole day here and the people in Baguio City were advised to stay indoors.

Cebu Province delegates, who arrived here last Thursday morning, have prepared mentally and physically for the landfall of Ompong.

“Before the landfall we met the athletes and coaches and instructed them to stay indoors, stack food and water. The coaches and our staff were also instructed to monitor the situation and directly relay it to the sports commission so we can report it to the LGU,” Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) executive director Atty. Ramil Abing told SunStar Cebu.

Abing said the athletes of Cebu Province are all safe and are being monitored by the CPSC, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the local government unit of Baguio City.

“The athletes are safe in the billeting center. I got a lot of calls from parents and I told them not to get worried. We hope that the weather will get better,” he said.

The LGU of Baguio City delivered breakfast and lunch to the athletes as of 2 p.m yesterday.

“We are also monitoring some of our athletes who stayed in hotels or transient houses and they are also safe,” added Abing.

Cebu Province has about 170 delegates for the national sporting meet conducted by PSC.

The Mandaue City Sports Commission officer-in-charge Stephen Jumao-as, meanwhile, said that their delegation is all good. The team is staying at Baguio Central Elementary School.

“There are police in the area. The athletes were advised to stay inside their rooms and the LGU also delivered food,” said Jumao-as.

Jumao-as’ only concern was that the comfort rooms weren’t enough for all the delegates staying in the school.

“Our badminton players rented a transient house, we have also monitored them and they are fine. Our city has 70 delegates and more than 40 are in the billeting center,” he said.

The biggest delegation from the Queen City of the South, the Cebu City Niños, are still in PhilSports Arena waiting for the weather to clear before they travel to Baguio City.

Some of the Cebu City athletes—the taekwondo and table tennis teams--are already in Baguio City. Those athletes are from taekwondo and table tennis.

Jopay Guanzon, one of the advance parties for Cebu City in Baguio City, said that the taekwondo and table tennis athletes are safe staying in hotels in Baguio City.

The majority of the 342-man team of Cebu City will leave from Manila to Baguio City on Sunday morning, said Guanzon. (RSC)
