Pagasa alerts coastal folks on descend of floodwater

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned anew residents along the Pampanga River banks to remain alert for the descend of floodwaters from upper areas of Central Luzon.

Hilton Hernandez, officer in charge of the PAGASA-Pampanga River Basin and Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, said the floodwater level in coastal areas of Pampanga is expected to rise despite the exit of typhoon Ompong from the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Floodwater from upstream part of Central Luzon is expected to fill Pampanga River, he said.

Based on the assessment of PAGASA as of yesterday noon, the portion Pampanga River in Arayat is already 8.62 meters, about a meter above its critical level.

Water level in Candaba is also above its critical level at 5.79 meters, Hernandez said.

He added that the water level in Arayat is expected to rise up to nine meters and up to six meters in Candaba.

The Sulipan portion in Apalit remain below its alert level until today.

“The impact on the water-level is low-rise but will still surely cause flooding in riverside areas, particularly those low-lying, but it will not be like flash floods since the rise of water will be gradual,” he said.

Hernandez said that the flooding in Macabebe and Masantol town as well as Calumpit and Hagonoy in Bulacan, which are all considered catch basin of Central Luzon will also be prolonged with the expected descend of floodwaters.

The said municipalities have been experiencing varying level of floodwaters for more than two months now due to several typhoons that hit the country.

“Always listen to the advisories and warnings released by your local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils as they know better. Also, observe your surrounding, especially the water level in your area and immediately evacuate if situation is deemed dangerous,” he said.

He also reminded residents in the coastal areas to avoid throwing waste on the river which slows down the draining of water to Manila Bay.
