THREE fishermen were rescued after their motorized boat capsized at the waters of Pulupandan in Negros Occidental Saturday, September 15, due to strong waves brought by Typhoon Ompong.
The victims were identified as Manuel Morales, 39; Carlo Nunal, 34; and Mark John Mallorca, 29, all residents of Barangay Patic.
Lieutenant Commander Lodovico Librilla, head of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Negros Occidental, said the victims departed from the said village at 9 a.m. to go fishing.
They insisted to go fishing despite the advisory of the PCG on Typhoon Ompong, he added.
While they were at the middle of the sea, their boat capsized after it was hit by big waves.
Residents were quick to ask help from the authorities when they sighted the three fishermen.
Personnel of the PCG and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) responded to the call for assistance and jointly conducted the rescue operation.
All three of them were accounted for and were brought to a health center.
On September 13, two children were also rescued after they almost got carried away by the strong current in a river in Hinoba-an town when they were getting coconuts.
A video showing the child climbing a tree was uploaded to Facebook.
They were rescued by village watchmen who were monitoring the area for the typhoon.
