Briones: It’s confirmed

IT’S nice to have somebody finally admit it.

Police Regional Office 7 Director Debold Sinas confirmed what the public suspected all along.

One of the reasons Cebuano businessman Peter Lim continues to elude authorities is because of his “links to police officers who may be protecting him.”

I know it’s not definite, but hey.

Lim was earlier indicted for conspiracy to commit illegal drug trading, along with self-confessed drug lord Kerwin Espinosa, Marcelo Adorco, and Ruel Malindangan.

The Department of Justice also offered a P500,000 reward money for anyone who can give information that would lead to his arrest.

“You know how deeply rooted Peter Lim is here. So if you say he has connections with the police, yes. They are still here,” Sinas told SunStar Cebu.

He went on to say that these police officers may allegedly have tipped Lim of the efforts to catch him.

“If he has money, maybe, maybe. We are monitoring who these police officers are. We are still monitoring them,” he added.

It’s a lot of “may bes and maybes,” but I’ll still take it. It’s not every day that the region’s police honcho drops a bombshell like that. And he is, after all, walking on eggshells.

Sinas is fully aware of the implication of his revelation. The fact that Lim’s alleged police protectors are still reporting for duty means he has to be careful and sensitive in handling the matter.

Hmm, I can already sense the vultures circling and looking forward to a feast.

As for Lim, well, the police’s hands are tied until the court releases an alias warrant against him, which basically means that the warrant will have no expiration and it can be served anywhere in the Philippines.

Oh, things are not looking good for the man accused of being a drug lord.

Aside from the outstanding P500,000 reward money, Sinas said that they would do another approach if the alias warrant is out. I don’t know what he means by “another approach,” but it certainly gave me the goosebumps.

Although, if you really ask me I don’t think Lim is still in the country.

It has been more than a month since the Makati Regional Trial Court issued the arrest warrant against the Cebuano businessman and several others for their alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade.

When police went to his residence on Tres Borces St. in Barangay Kasambagan, Cebu City, they were told that Lim had not been there for a long time. A decade to be exact.

They also went to Lim’s house in Barangay Banilad. They scoured the entire property, but no Lim to be found.

No surprise there.

Well, I guess that leaves Lim’s police protectors.
