SAN SIMON -- Real Steel Corporation distributed Tuesday, September 18, relief packs to hundreds of Simonians who participated in the smelting plant’s two-month long clean-up drive conducted in this town.

Real Steel Corporation Pollution Control Officer Cyril Hilario said the company prepared 1,400 relief packs for residents of the 14 barangays of San Simon that were all covered by the smelting plant’s environmental protection project.

“This is our way of giving back to those who assisted us in our clean-up drive which we launched last July. We wanted to thank them, especially barangay officials, for showing support and joining us in our goal to promote cleanliness,” Hilario said.

“Although the project was launched in July, our management decided to conduct relief operations today to help our partners who were affected by the recent onslaught of Typhoon Ompong,” she added.

The chairmen of the three barangays who initially benefitted from the relief operations expressed their gratitude to Real Steel Corporation for extending a helping hand to the people of San Simon.

“Real Steel Corporation has been very helpful to our barangay and we are always grateful for all the assistance that they are extending to the people of Barangay Sto. Niño,” said Barangay Sto. Niño chairman Perlito Dagdag Jr.

He added that the clean-up drive initiated by Real Steel Corporation has become fruitful and its results are evident as the barangay has not experienced severe flooding despite the successive onslaught of typhoons and the southwest monsoon.

“Their distribution of relief packs is very timely as the residents here are still reeling from the flooding and other effects of the typhoon and really need assistance such as this,” Barangay San Juan chairman Iris Catindig added.

Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer Melchor Tayag, for his part, lauded the sustained initiative of the smelting plant in caring for the environment, this time via a municipal-wide clean-up drive.

“This kind of environmental protection project is very essential during these times of calamity where even the areas that are not prone to flooding are also submerged in floodwaters now. And we are thankful to Real Steel Corporation for spearheading such a project as part of their corporate social responsibility,” he said.

Hilario, meanwhile, said they are also set to distribute food packs to the remaining 11 barangays of this town, which also participated in the clean-up drive this week, wherein each village will receive 100 food packs.
