Baguio teachers’ day sought

AWARDS and recognition is being pushed for teachers in Baguio City.

An ordinance was filed recently by Councilor Joel Alangsab which seeks to declare the last Monday of September as “Teacher’s Day” and confer awards to outstanding educators.

“Teachers serve as the epitome of dedicated public servants for being the paradigm of sacrifice, selfless service to the society and molder of young minds,” Alangsab said.

The city official added the city is committed to advance the education sector by providing projects and programs for the benefit of all.

“To recognize the sacrifices, service and dedication of school teachers in the city and give due respect and admiration to committed teachers whom the educational and development of our children depends, there is a need to enact this ordinance,” adds Alangsab.

The proposed law covers both public and private school teachers.

Citations to be given during the proposed Teachers’ Day include outstanding child development worker, outstanding pre-elementary / kinder teacher, outstanding elementary teacher, outstanding secondary / junior school teacher, outstanding secondary / senior school teacher, outstanding teacher for inclusive education and outstanding school administrator.

Each awardee will receive a plaque of recognition, a resolution by the local council recognizing their efforts as well as P10,000 cash incentive.

A search committee will be made comprised of local government unit, Department of Education and other institutions and agencies to assess the merits of nominees.

If approved, Alangsab is allotting a funding of P150,000 for the event with the ordinance hurdling the first reading.
