Crime syndicate member dies; P10.2-M shabu seized

A SUSPECTED crime syndicate member was killed while some P10.2 million worth of illegal drugs were seized in a drug bust on Monday, September 17 in Zamboanga Zibugay, police said Tuesday.

Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the suspect Jamil Asmad allegedly resisted arrest and fought back upon sensing they were transacting with law enforcers.

Asmad was with a minor and another suspect, Igno Ahod alias Utho during the illegal drugs operation conducted by law enforcers around 8:15 p.m. in the village of Poblacion, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay. The minor was arrested while Utho managed to escape.

Confiscated during the drug bust were 1.5 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride commonly known as shabu packed in two heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets worth P10.2 million; one caliber .45 pistol with seven live ammunition; two cellular phones, a motorcycle, two paper bags; and three bills of P1,000 marked money placed on top of boodle money.

Galvez said the drug bust was carried out by policemen, soldiers and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency agents.

Asmad, she said, was in the PNP target list under the criminal gang category.

Cases for violation of Section 26 in relation to Section 5, Article II of Republic Act 9165 or the Dangerous Drugs Act are being readied for filing in court against the minor and Utho.
