Bus drivers who 'disrespected the nation's flag' get a slap on the wrist

SAN Fernando Mayor Lakambini Reluya demands a public apology from two bus drivers who allegedly sped off while she and other town officials were holding a flag ceremony last Monday.

Reluya initially wanted to file charges against Arnel Maning and Eric Mayol of Britt Bus Liners for violating Republic Act 8491, or the Flag and Heraldic Code, for disrespecting the nation’s flag.

Although he has already told the drivers to settle the matter, Britt Bus Liners operator Julieto Flores also urged San Fernando officials to put up signs to remind drivers to stop during the flag ceremony in front of the town hall, which is located along the national highway.

The incident happened around 8 a.m. last Monday.

Traffic enforcers Fedelito Opada and Pepito Tangaro were signaling vehicles on the highway to stop during the national anthem when the buses driven by Maning and Mayol counterflowed and sped towards Cebu City.

Opada and Tangaro were almost hit.

Reluya ordered Novem Louie Taping, San Fernando Traffic Enforcement Group head, to report the matter to the local police.

They also coordinated with Capitol traffic management focal person and Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) head Jonathan Tumulak to locate and identify the two drivers.

In a separate interview, Ricardo Reluya, the mayor’s husband and current Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president, told SunStar Cebu that while they were bent on filing charges against the two drivers, his wife decided to give them a slap on the wrist.

If the drivers apologize, all will be forgiven, he said.

Maning and Mayol are suspended from work until the matter is settled.
