Tell it to SunStar: History and the youth

WITH the release of films such as “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral,” many Filipinos, most especially the youth, learned from the mistakes of our past. Like the sudden appearance of a specter, we were shaken to the core. But the question is, why only now?

The fault is the failure of the youth to study history as well as the government’s failure to garner interest in the endeavor. The youth’s lack of interest to study and learn their homeland’s history is alarming and saddening. Learning history is where patriotism and critical thinking is nurtured.

By understanding the triumphs and failures of the past, we can see what went wrong and what went right. Thus, we gain wisdom to steer the ship that is our Republic to a brighter future.

It was because of history that Dr. Jose Rizal was inspired to put into paper our struggle for a better future. Let us then continue to follow his example and be the new heroes that our country needs.

Also, it is the duty of a government to teach its citizens the events of the past. Not only will the act educate the people, it can foster dutiful, patriotic citizens inspired by love of nation. There are many people in the government who are excellent workers but what if they retire? Is it guaranteed that the next worker is as good as them?

Thus, we cannot leave things by chance. We must ensure that the next generation is committed to the prosperity of our nation. We cannot rely on the few to care for us. if we continue to depend on them, there won’t be a minority left.

Let us not forget our history and instead properly honor the sacrifices of Generals Antonio Luna and Gregorio del Pilar by being, in President Manuel L. Quezon’s words, “A Republic of virtuous men and women all working together for a better world than the one we have at present.”

And for those who believe otherwise and think our Republic as a pipe dream, then here is a quote from the movie, “Heneral Luna,” for you:

“If progress is just a dream, then let us dream on until death.”--Emmanuel Mojica, Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion-Cebu
