Lavandia wins bronze in Spain

ERLINDA Lavandia scored another feat in her illustrious career after bagging a bronze medal in the 23rd World Masters Athletics Championships.

Lavandia threw the javelin with a distance of 27.95 meters on her first attempt to take the bronze in the event as American Linda Cohn dominated with a world record-breaking 34.81m heave.

The former police officer’s medal was the first for the country in competition which was held in Spain last week.

Lavandia tried to improve on her effort but managed only 25.36m, 25.28m, and 25.97m and a foul on her succeeding tries to finish behind Spaniard Emilia Mesa, who posted a second-best 28.90m.

The Baguio-based Lavandia was part of the 16 strong team who represent the Philippines in the biennial world championships for masters athletes.

Last year, Lavandia hurled the spear at 30.58 meters to regain the gold medal in the javelin throw during the 2017 World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships recently at the Blue Arc stadium in Daegu, South Korea.

Lavandia made sure she would reclaim the gold after her silver medal finish last year in the same event held in Perth, Australia with a 30. 28 meters heave. (Roderick Osis)
