SM told to comply with city laws

BAGUIO City Councilor Edgar Avila stressed SM City Baguio must recognize city guidelines and obtain permits before the operation of its amusement park.

“Like everybody else, SM must comply with our laws, local and otherwise. We are disturbed by the virtual takeover of the road which they treat as their private domain. We, however, respect their right to build or do business within their titled property, but subject to our exercise of our police regulatory powers,” said Avila.

Despite the uproar of sectors, Avila said halting the ongoing project is not an option as of the moment.

“We can't stop now as it would infringe on their property rights. Before the issuance of permit to operate, they must submit and comply,”

Councilor Faustino Olowan added SM has to comply with all requirement.

Olowan clarified the project falls within the city zoning ordinances but amended their environment compliance certificate to accommodate their amusement park project.

Weeks ago, the city council called on the management of the SM City Sky Ranch project to determine if safety, zoning as well as traffic measures have been considered.

Members of the Baguio City Association of Barangay Councils called on representatives of the mall chain as well as permitting officials of the city to look into the legality and safety of the almost finished amusement park at Luneta Hill.

Representatives from the mall were present on Monday’s regular session and vowed to comply with all rules the city has before opening operations of the amusement park.
