THE events industry is a very demanding and competitive one. Entrepreneurs who enter this type of industry have to be ready to face the challenges and pressures thrown at them.

Katrina Singon Sullan, owner and founder of Katrina S Events, started her business in the events industry after a friend, who was an event stylist, encouraged her to work as a wedding coordinator.

"She told me I could become a coordinator, so I said let's give it a try," she said.

Before she started her business, she enrolled in an 18-unit course in wedding planning by Weddings Beautiful Worldwide, Philippines.

"After successfully earning the title of ‘Certified Wedding Specialist,’ I launched my own events firm and the rest, as they say, is history," she said on her website, katrinasevents.com.

Katrina, who graduated with a degree in Business and Management major in Entrepreneurship from Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU), said she chose to focus on weddings because of how "pure" it was.

"Everytime I attend weddings, it is very pure. Unlike social events, it has that pure purpose -- unity in facing God and family. Of all the events, I enjoy weddings. It is intimate," she said.

Despite the challenges thrown at her, Katrina was able to surpass it given her passion for entrepreneurship, work ethics, and experience.

She said her time with Apple, where she left as an Apple Certified Trainer, allowed her to not only value the product she provides her clients but also the service she gives.

Being naturally shy, Katrina loves to engage with people and her previous work experience allowed her to effectively deal with her clients.

Katrina said her love for learning helped her to be equipped on the different aspects of her business.

When it comes to pressure, she said she relishes on it.

"I relish in the pressure. It means, God is trying to teach and mold me to become better. I relish in my mistakes, I would ask my clients how I can make things better. I learn from there," Katrina said.

As a wedding coordinator, she is happy when she knows that she provided quality service to her clients.

"I am happy, when the couple is really happy of my service. Not only the couple but also the parents. It is not just about the product but how you make the people feel," Katrina said.

For young entrepreneurs out there, she encourages them to go for the ideas they have in mind but at the same time cautions them that they make sure that they are an expert on what they are about to do.

"Before you start a business, make sure you are an expert on it. I would advise you to study and train and (attend) workshops," Katrina said.

She added, "Learning never stops, after that start your own business and find your niche."
