Soldier dies, 7 hurt in roadside bombing

A ROADSIDE bombing perpetrated by suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits rocked the island province of Basilan Tuesday, killing a soldier and wounding seven others, the military said.

The explosion killed a soldier from the Army's 32nd Infantry Battalion, while seven others were injured.

First Lieutenant Steffani Cacho, Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) information officer, said the incident took place around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday between the villages Libug and Cabcaban in Sumisip town.

Cacho said the troops were about to go on marketing when the vehicle they were riding tripped on an improvised bomb that was fashioned out as a landmine.

Cacho said the explosion was followed by a burst of gunfire.

She said the military believed the attack was perpetrated by the Abu Sayyaf bandits led by Furuji Indama and Abugao Bayali.

The wounded soldiers were brought to a military hospital in Zamboanga City, while the troops are pursuing the perpetrators.
