Globe picks Santa Cruz for pilot project

GLOBE Telecom’s goal to get every Filipino connected to the world through the internet has intensified as they launched its new project, Kapit WiFi, at the pilot barangay, Santa Cruz, Cebu City, last Monday.

Kapit WiFi, according to Globe marketing manager Jio Igual, allows users to have unlimited internet access for one hour for P15 and another free hour for first-time users.

With this innovation, Igual said that there is no need for people to pay for internet installment or buy a modem. They only need to enter their phone numbers and they can already have unlimited internet for one hour.

There are different access points located within the area where users can connect.

Igual said that the advantage of Kapit WiFi from other internet promos is its unlimited data. And it is also open to users of other networks.

Kapit WiFi has a minimum speed of 5Mbps, which is enough for one to stream videos without any buffers, Igual assured.

Maya de Jesus, Globe experience head, shared that they chose Barangay Santa Cruz as their pilot barangay because they saw that there are many consumers living in the area.

“Mas maraming gumagamit ng data, but namamahalan ‘yong consumer (There are more using data, but the consumers find it expensive),” de Jesus explained.

De Jesus shared that they also want people to shift to better but cheaper technology by bringing it to the neighborhood so anyone can have access and make use of it.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who was present during the launch, described the event as “a turning point.”

“It is a turning point nga maabot ang serbisyo ngadto sa mga ordinaryong taw (that services reach the ordinary people),” Osmeña said in his speech.

Osmeña also congratulated the barangay for being the first area in the country to have been installed with access points for the Kapit WiFi.

Igual said that they are planning to expand the installation of Kapit WiFi to other areas in the city.

“We want to connect homes to the internet because it opens up all the possibilities, and that’s the main goal,” explained Igual. Jerra Mae Librea, USJ-R Intern
