Pangan: Something to be thankful for

TODAY marks my seven decades and one year of existence, something I should be thankful for, not that I've outlived some of my contemporaries, school batch mates and dear friends.

I am thankful for having survived two strokes, mild ones, in 2014 and 2015 and have existed since then, hassle-free.

After several years of service at the City Government as the Peso coordinator and previously, as loan processor at the Bank of the Philippine Islands, I feel fulfilled seeing my children and grandchildren grow happy and healthy, except Regie, a regular patient of hospitals!

Now, I am occupied with writing columns for Sun Star which come out every Mondays and Fridays. It gives me the ultimate satisfaction that at my age I can still write with some sense.

I still keep steadfast friends like Eric Cajipe, Rosan S. Paquia, Mar Canlas and Alex Reyes and maintain a good relationship with my siblings Mely and Perry and a nodding relationship with other brothers still in the Philippines and others abroad: Mars is in Peru, Rene and family are in Canada and Debbie Jane in Saudi Arabia. I can only wish them all good luck since communications with them have been too few and far between.

A season of disasters. Work and class suspensions. Spiraling prices of oil and basic commodities. Inflation and unemployment at an all-time high. Our ranking in the world competitiveness continuously sliding downward with no relief in sight.

These are but few of the not-so-good effects of disasters visiting our country and they continue on a pattern, a vicious cycle of disasters.

They are now permanent fixture in our climate arrangement. The NDRRMC meanwhile is active in sending out text messages about the latest climate changes and movements.

In all, what do we do? Aside from praying, we just sit down calmly grin and bear all of these disasters stoically.
