Sungduan: Fundraiser

OVERSEAS Filipino Workers in Europe are raising funds for the affected families and victims of Typhoon “Ompong” (Mankhut) in Cordillera.

Upon learning the heartbreaking news, Archie Nabus with wife Grace who are based in London immediately formed the Fundraiser drive which they posted in Facebook. This aims to raise the funds needed for the affected families of the landslide victims at Loacan, Itogon, Benguet.

“When I heard about this heartbreaking news, there was a strong gut feeling that something needs to be done ASAP and that people will want to extend a helping hand,” Archie said.

He then contacted the treasurer of their organization Benguet Org - UK (BOUK) whom he calls as Manang Tina as most of the victims are her relatives and she knows most of the other victims. Then he spearheaded the campaign by creating the fundraiser activity in Facebook.

Since they started the Fundraiser, many have already responded to the call and signified their full support for the very important undertaking.

“I must admit, I am extremely overwhelmed by the response of our families, friends and acquaintances on social media and didn’t expect the fund raising to get this far very quickly,” he added.

He also said that for the past 10 years, his involvement in the promotion of Igorot culture through Benguet Organization - UK and Igorot UK also made him see how these groups have taken action when disaster strikes at the very heart of “HOME.”

These community organizations have been involved in fund raising drives to extend help to those who are affected by calamities like these current landslides. Previously, they also conducted the old-fashioned way of collecting donations for victims of natural disasters such as Typhoon Haiyan, the fire in Mankayan and the Typhoon that devastated Little Kibungan, among others.

Meanwhile, in Vienna Austria Jeth Magoo also initiated a similar activity in Facebook dubbed OG-OGBO (helping one another) which is a Cultural Tradition practiced by the Igorots in the Cordillera Region.

“Wherever we are, we all had the urge to help in every way we could, especially now that our home land was devastated by the typhoon, leaving casualties, injuries to our people and damages to properties, crops & livelihoods,” she said.

The amount that will be raised will benefit the victims & casualties’ families of Typhoon Ompong from all the Provinces of the Cordillera (BIMAAK).

In times of crisis back home, the Overseas Filipino Workers in Europe have always been there giving a helping hand. With everyone helping, Cordillera will rise again.
