Dealing with Gen Z underscored in gab

UNDERSTANDING the role of educators in the development of the society, Lyceum of the Philippines–Davao hosted the Educator’s Conference 2018 on Thursday to address teachers' concerns in dealing with the new generation of students - Generation Z.

Felipe Balingit Jr., Lyceum of the Philippines–Davao vice president and chief academic officer, in an interview Thursday, said this is their way of exercising their corporate social responsibility through helping fellow educators acquire new knowledge and skills that they can use when they return to their respective schools.

“Now, our theme is creating synergy in the academe for the 21st century learners. Our new batch of learners is different. They are no longer millennial, we are now calling them the Generation Z,” he said.

There were around 300 participants from private and public schools in Mindanao who participated Thursday and shared their best practices in handling the new learners.

“Davao City is becoming the hub of education in Mindanao. Many schools are coming here now. This is also our way of introducing to them LPU Davao which will open in June 2019 next year,” he added.

Balingit said, “It is a very good way of helping teachers acquire more knowledge and skills at the same time appreciate LPU Davao better.”

The conference is focused on Managing Stakeholders’ Issues and Expectation through strategic communication and imparting to participants the latest legal issues on managing student discipline and implementation of students’ policies and programs.

“We are focusing on all about communications, the intricacies of properly communicating especially to the General Z members. This afternoon is all about the legal aspect so that educators can better appreciate current laws and regulations. It’s all about following laws at the same time preventing conflicts like bullying, sexual harassment,” he said.

Balingit, meanwhile, said that with the positive response of the educators here in Mindanao, they plan to hold another similar conference next year in Davao City. (JCR)
