Hail in Toril

RESIDENTS in Dumoy, Toril, Davao City were surprised Thursday, September 20, when hailstones rained for less than an hour in their area alongside with heavy rains.

Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office operations officer Rodrigo Bustillo the hail storm that happened Thursday only occurred in that area of Toril around 1:30 p.m.

Bustillo said this was the first time the city was able to experience such incident but he emphasized that it was a normal occurrence. The ice crystals was not dangerous though since it only measured as small as a grain of corn.

“Natural phenomenon na sya [which means] nga very low temperature ang atmospheric pressure so pag mag mag ulan ang uban nga tubig sa atmosphere ma solidify before it reach in the ground that we call a hailstorm (It is a natural phenomenon where the temperature of the atmospheric pressure is low. When it rains, some of the droplets solidify before it reaches the ground, that is what we call a hail storm),” he said.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said hailstones are formed through a combination of warm, moist and stormy weather conditions. It usually occurrs when thunderstorm updrafts become strong enough to carry water droplets that are already above the freezing level, that is when hailstones are formed.

Pagasa on Thursday issued a Heavy Rainfall Warning signal No. 1 at around 2:30 p.m. due to Intertropical Convergence Zone. Davao City, Maguindanao, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Davao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Sulu and Tawi-tawi were placed in yellow warning level wherein public and the disaster risk reduction and management council concerned were advised to take appropriate actions.
