Cebu City, Province in contention for top 5 finish

TWO of the teams from the Queen City of the South—Cebu City Niños and Cebu Province--remained in contention for slots in the overall Top 5 ranking of the Batang Pinoy National Championship in Baguio City.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will shell out P3 million worth of assistance to the overall champion in the national sporting meet that feature the qualifiers from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The second placer will get P3 million, the third placer will get P2.5, while the fourth and fifth placers will get P1.5 million and P1 million, respectively.

The last play date was yesterday but some games were still played at press time.

In the recent official and partial medal tally by the PSC, the host city Baguio sits on top of the overall standing with a 46-46-57 gold-silver-bronze medal haul. It is followed by Quezon City with 21-12-16 and Cebu City with 20-25-28.

Laguna Province was at fourth place with 20-8-20 and Cebu Province was at fifth with a 16-9-15 medal output.

The medal tally, though, is expected to change since some of the results in the 27 events have yet to be submitted to the secretariat.

The Cebu City Sports Commission has its own tally and based on its unofficial count, Cebu City has 35 golds, 39 silver and 37 bronze medals at press time.

The Cebu Province’s unofficial medal tally, meanwhile, was at 22-8-14 based on the record from the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission.

Cebu Province’s last gold medal came from Alec Xandrhe Bonita, who won via unanimous decision over Mark John Onal of South Cotabato in the boys’ 44-46-kilo division in boxing. RSC
