End martial law, priests urge

CATHOLIC priests in Davao City urged the government to end the martial law in Mindanao and asked the public to “never forget” the victims during the Marcos regime.

The candle lighting and noise barrage activity in commemoration of martial law was led by the priests of Redemptorist Church and students of St. Alphonsus Theological and Mission Institute (SATMI).

“Aming panawagan ay matapos ang deklarasayon ng martial law sa Mindanao dahil ang naaapektuhan ay ang mga Lumad natin dahil hanggang ngayon, sila ay hindi pa nakakabalik sa kanilang ancestral lands,” Victorino Cueto, CSsR and director of SATMI, said during an interview with SunStar Davao on Friday, September 21.

“Sana ay makita ng mga Pilipino na kahabag-habag ang kalagayan ng ating mga kapatid na Lumad,” Cueto said, adding that Martial Law may be taken advantage by mining and logging companies driving away the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in their own land.

Cueto further said Filipinos have been forgetful of their history so they want them to remember.

“Nais nating balikan at gunitain ang noon para hindi na natin gawin ngayon,” he said.

“Marami sa ating lipunan ngayon ang nais baguhin ang kasaysayan, kaya naisipan naming dito sa Redemptorist community na muli ay ipaalala sa atin noong panahon ng diktadorya ng mga Marcoses, ano ba talaga ang nangyari,” he added.

He added that the church remains passionate about the country.

“Tayo lang naman ang magmamahal sa bayan natin kaya ‘wag na nating ulitin ang pagkakamali sa ating kasaysayan,” he said.

It has been 46 years when Martial Law was proclaimed in the Philippines by former President Ferdinand Marcos, and on May 23, 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte again declared Martial Law, but this time only in Mindanao following the siege in Marawi City.
