655-ton garbage collected daily

THE Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) has been collecting an average of 655 tons of garbage per day.

Marivic Reyes, Cenro officer-in-charge engineer, told SunStar Davao in an interview on September 21, that the volume of garbage collected was due to increase in population in the city and the office’s daily collection itself.

She said they have been conducting a 24-hour operation everyday in order to maintain cleanliness in the city.

There are residents who complain about the delay of garbage collection but Reyes said that it was due to limited garbage trucks available in the city.

“Sa 24 hours pa naman na operation, maguba gyud ang truck dayon (Because of the 24-hour operation, garbage trucks of the city easily get damaged),” Reyes said, adding that the garbage trucks in the city would only last five to 10 years with its 24/7 operation.

“The city government of Davao is processing the purchase of garbage trucks but dili na agad-agad kay mahal baya na (The city government of Davao is already processing the purchase of garbage trucks but it will take time since it costs a lot),” she said.

For the meantime, the city has been renting garbage trucks to cater to the demand of the growing population and increase in the number of garbage collected each day.
