Custodia: On Friendship

WHENEVER I am in Manila, I try to make it a point to meet up with friends. Reuniting with them can be really tricky, with the traffic and lately, the weird weather.

They also have hectic schedules to boot, so much so that sometimes it would be wiser to just stay in touch through Facebook! But there really is nothing like sitting across the table with good friends so I make the effort to do so when circumstances permit it.

There is something about getting together with old friends that makes me feel good. I feel like we had just seen each other the day before and simply picked up where we have left off. The element of time passing seemed to have melted away. I guess you would agree that that’s the way with true friendship, everything just feels right and comfortably familiar. Happy warm fuzzy feeling we can never have too much of in our lifetime, I would say.

Is it just me or do you miss the kind of conversations that you have with old friends too? I realize how much I long for such conversations whenever I am with them. It does not even have to be about serious things! I get the most fun out of being able to talk about mundane things, like how we split a cup coffee so that we can have some while a fresh batch brewed on the kitchen counter.

Reminiscing need not be the end all and be all of such conversations too. We talked about future plans, present day timetables and musings more than what we did “while we were young” in our last get together and had a good laugh!

It is truly amazing for old friendships to survive and blossom into worthwhile, meaningful relationships. It is heartwarming to know that friendships can survive time, trials and tribulations and despite disagreements and differences. I guess as time passes and you get older, you learn to appreciate what you have more than ever.

This is not to discount new friendships, by the way. Both should be valued and treasured.

New friends should always be welcomed with open arms! There are those that take time to blossom but there’s a special group of people you just instantly click with when you meet them! They come into your life unexpectedly and forge friendships that make you feel at ease instantly!

Treasure those! Some of my oldest friends started as instant friends. I guess that’s the closest I have to actually experiencing love at first sight and believe me, I don’t mind at all!

It is truly a blessing to have real friends. They support you, love you and unabashedly scold you when you’ve started threading the wrong path in life. Take care of them and treasure them because it sure is amazing to grow old and gray with them! Happy Sunday Everyone! :)
