Abrigo: Being part of the traffic solution

TRAFFIC bottleneck in some main thoroughfares of modernizing cities like Davao is inevitable. The primary cause according to studies is the increasing population, meliorating economic activities, and (let me add) undisciplined drivers.

One of the areas considered as chokepoint to vehicles on peak hours here is in Matina, from corner Maa Road to Bangkerohan bridge, where there are three school campuses stretching and ended near to a narrow bridge leading to the market.

City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) chief Dionisio Abude said there was a proposal to build an overpass along the Ateneo-Matina area where pedestrian traffic has increased over the years, more so with the opening of the Mapua Institute of Technology.

But as you see it, pedestrian doesn’t tally much of the clog; it is with the undisciplined drivers.

Survey says, during the rush hour going to the downtown, 74 percent of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) students take private personal cars or taxi in going to school on a daily basis. These cars have an average of between one to two children. The most common drop-off time and pick-up time are 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. onwards, respectively.

The substantial number of vehicles dropping children at the vicinity of AdDU hinders other vehicles especially PUJs, and this number is a no laughing matter.

Most of the drivers are not only dropping children with conscience because they lack discipline to park on the shoulder but to remain longer than they are supposed to stay on this busy street.

We need to develop a more efficient traffic management system if not a stiffer implementation of law.

The CTTMO said since April 2016, they started towing illegally-parked vehicles that were causing traffic flow to clog, there were hundreds of apprehensions recorded. But until now, apprehensions did not instill discipline.

This multi-million school may design their own drive-thru if only to show order and discipline as has been taught to the children. Because students learn good manners and discipline not only from their parents at home but also from the school they study from. (abrigodann@gmail.com)
