Milo marathon Cebu qualifiers target 20,000 participants

THE runners and fitness enthusiasts in Cebu can still sign up for the 2018 Milo Marathon Cebu Leg after the organizers extended the deadline of registration until Oct. 10.

The qualifying race in Cebu is expected to draw about 20,000 runners on Oct. 14. The race will kick off in front of the Cebu Normal University at the Osmena Blvd. and will end at the Cebu City Sports Center.

This year’s elimination round in Cebu will feature the 3-kilometer, 5K, 10K and the 21K categories. The half-marathon distance serves as the qualifier for the runners who are aiming to secure a slot to the Milo National Finals set on Dec.9 in Laoag City.

The participants in the 21K are required to submit a physician’s certificate upon registration to check the fitness of the long-distance runner before doing a half-marathon.

The registration for the Cebu leg was supposed to close yesterday but it was extended for another 15 days to give runners ample time to register.

Cebu’s head organizer Ricky Ballesteros told SunStar Cebu yesterday that the route will still be the same as last year’s but minus the 42K distance since there’s no full marathon in Cebu’s regional leg.

Cebu hosted the national finals last year, when Cebuana Mary Joy Tabal won her fifth straight title in dramatic-fashion. The 29th Southeast Asian Games medalist Tabal earlier confirmed her participation but as a defending champion, she’s already guaranteed a slot to the national finals.

The race in Cebu is one of the 10 elimination rounds in the country that fired off in Urdaneta last July 15 followed by Metro Manila on July 29, Tarlac on Aug. 16 and Batangas on Sept. 16. The remaining regional legs are Lucena on Sept. 30, Iloilo on Oct. 7, Butuan on Nov. 11, Cagayan de Oro on Nov. 18 and Gen. Santos on Oct. 21.

Registration fee is at P950 for the 21K, P850 for the 10K, P160 for the adults in the 5K and 3K and P110 for the students in the 5K and 3K divisions. (RSCS)
