Baguio, Benguet benefits from Batang Pinoy staging

ASIDE from bagging the overall championship title and the P3-million cash incentives, Baguio City and nearby Benguet Province benefitted in the staging of the Batang Pinoy National Championships last week.

Baguio City which co–hosted the weeklong sports event for 15 years old and below were able to secure at least P18 million worth of sports equipment from the Philippine Sports Commission.

Baguio City dominated the weeklong event joined by 190 local government units with 83 golds, 81 silver and 197 bronze medals as Mayor Mauricio Domogan thanked the athletes’ parents and guardians for their support and sacrifices, as well as the PSC, not only for its financial, sports equipment and other logistical support to the host local governments, but especially for catering to the needs of athletes who numbered almost 7,000 representing 94 LGUs.

“Batang Pinoy is the basic foundation of all the sports in the country dahil dito sinisimulan ang paghuhubog hindi lang ang discipline, values, behavior at well-being ng mga kabataan kundi pati na ang kanilang future at ang importansiya nila sa komunidad,” said Domogan during the thanksgiving at Camp John Hay.

“Kaya po kami ay nagpupundar at nakatutok sa mga kabataan dahil sila ang susunod nating henerasyon at sila ang future national athletes natin na magbibigay prestihiyo at karangalan sa bansa,” added Domogan.

Lawyer Noel Ngolob, representing Benguet Governor Crescencio Pacalso, also congratulated the participants as he rallied the country’s youth to sustain their involvement in sports.

Baguio flexed its muscle winning 19 golds in arnis, 16 in wushu, 13 in muay Thai, 10 in taekwondo, nine in judo, and five in pencak silat.

The highland city also secured eight gold medals in wrestling, winning half of its gold haul in the 14-15 categories.

The weeklong tournament is part of PSC’s grassroots development program aimed at discovering potential members of the national team. (Roderick Osis)
