Hidalgo: On urgent need for renewable energy

THERE is the challenge in advancing renewable energy in the Philippines.

The country must consider green initiatives and investments in renewable energy as part of a long-term solution to the growing power needs of the country and to mitigate the bad effects of environmental degradation and climate changes.

In our country, geothermal energy is not being fully maximized despite being only second after the United States in terms of capacity. This energy is clean and abundant. Our country is tapping this power from the volcanic belt that springs throughout the archipelago.

Wind power can be used to produce energy. The world famous Bangui Windmills in Paoay, Ilocos Norte is a tourist attraction because of its pioneering example in producing electricity for the province. Know wind directions in any given place will make it possible to use the windmills. This will make possible the turning of turbines to generate electricity in any given place. The energy is clean and can substitute to the harmful of fossil fuels which lead to the dreaded earth warming effects.

Solar power is gaining popularity in the Philippines. There are business establishments which sell needed equipment to install solar panels for homes and business investments. Solar power has many advantages -- it is free, plentiful, clean, and readily available to provide the energy needed. I am glad that we have one installed in our residence. The initial expenses in the installation is a good investment. In the house we install as many solar bulbs we want in every part of the house. Abvantages are no more high power bills and electricity available during brownouts.

Biomass as energy can also be utilized in homes, factories, or farms. The place should construct a biogas generator appliance in a convenient plac. The distinct advantage is using all waste products or bagasse, which is usually just left to rot to be collected in the biogas chamber. The more waste, the better. I remember seeing a laboratory in UPLB where they tested the most efficient sources for biogasfrom human to animal feces, which will yield the best methane gas to light your stoves. Pig feces were best so Maya Farms uses this.
