Oro malls: No plastic bags on Wednesdays, Saturdays

AN OFFICIAL of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro) said big malls in Cagayan de Oro all agreed to lead the campaign against the use of plastic cellophane and will stop issuing them every Wednesdays and Saturdays starting next month.

Clenro head Engineer Armen Cuenca said in a conference last week, all mall managers in the city all gave positive response in the city government's effort to be plastic-free.

Cuenca said all of the business establishments are cooperating with their plan, and will heed Clenro's initiative to create special counters for purchasing customers using their own reusable bags in an aim to promote the use of ecobags.

Ecobags will also soon be available at the City Hall as they are working to mass produce ecobags made by Indigenous Peoples in the hinterland barangays of Cagayan de Oro.

"We are in the process of organizing our lumad residents who want to make ecobags their means of livelihood," he said.

"Aside from being a plastic-free city, we are also helping the lumad sector earn a living by ecobag-making," he said.

Pursuant to Ordinance on Integrated Ecological Solid Waste Management, establishments are directed not to provide plastic bags as their packaging materials for dry goods and cooked foods.

The use of recyclable and reusable bags as alternative packaging materials shall be promoted, such as natural fiber bags, woven bags, cloth bags and rattan baskets made from recycled waste materials.

All stores shall adopt the "Bring Your Own Bag" and shall formulate appropriate incentives to consumers to encourage the use of ecobags.
