A TWO-DAY performance dedicated to Typhoon “Ompong” (Mankhut) victims raised P25,000 last week.
The busking was led by Pasakalye artists who performed along Session Road last week enticing passersby to donate cash for typhoon victims confined to the Baguio General Hospital (BGH).
Performers offered songs for two days, raising enough for eight patients at the BGH to augment their medical needs. The amount was turned over and divided to the patients.
Months ago, street performers raised opposition to a proposed law aiming to standardize and legalize performances through permits if they want to perform at city streets.
Citing an increasing number of street performers in Baguio City, Councilor Leandro Yangot filed a measure that will regulate and register street performers in the city.
A designated area for performance will also be assigned to zone performers and create a space dedicated for them as well as the public to enjoy.
The ordinance aims to regulate “busking” or the act of performing in public places for gratuities.
If the new law is passed, a permit must be acquired by the performers at city hall with a corresponding fee of P350 for a year.
