A DAVAO City councilor plans to propose to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to require motorcycle owners to undergo a motorcycle riding course in view of the rising number of road accidents involving motorcycles.

Davao City Councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte, during the Pulong-Pulong ni Pulong (PPP) on Tuesday, September 24, said she will propose to the City Council that motorcycle riders should take the course before purchasing a unit to help lessen traffic accidents.

"I was told na, correct me if I'm wrong, but there are 100,000 motorcycles sold in a year in Davao City alone," she said, adding that there have been reports on motorcycle-related traffic incidents.

Villafuerte said most of the time, accidents are caused by drivers and only few are caused by road conditions or the actual vehicle.

"Feel ko talaga may kakulangan tayo (I feel that we lack something)," Villafuerte said, pertaining to the number of accidents in the city and that training motorcycle riders could help lessen these cases.

She also said the motorcycle training course certificate shall be a requirement along +with the license of the driver.

Meanwhile, the training course, according to Villafuerte, will be conducted free as their committee, and all the other offices involved in traffic management, will try to tap motorcycle companies.

“Pag bumili ka ng motor, sana ay free siya so sana makahanap kami ng lugar where yung malalaking dealers ay magkaisa at gumawa ng academy na doon ang training,” she said.

She added that motorcycle companies have the social responsibility to keep riders safe.
