Oro athletes close out campaign with 11 golds

BAGUIO CITY -- The Cagayan de Oro pugs delivered six golds, 2 silvers and a bronze to emerge as overall champions in the boxing competition at the close of the 2018 Batang Pinoy National Championships on Friday.

Althea Porres and Cyril Payla easily handed the first two golds for Oro boxing team with no opponents in the female junior 54 kilograms (kgs) and the school boys 36 kgs categories, respectively.

Angelou Lofranco, Eljay Pamisa, Jhasli John Illudar and Ailene Kaye Caranagan, on the other hand, won gold medals via hard fought victories with unanimous decisions in their respective championship bouts.

The 13-year-old Lofranco, a grade 7 student of Macasandig National High School, won the third gold after beating Roderick Bautista of General Santos City in the school boys 38 kgs finals category.

Pamisa, the 14-year-old nephew of head coach Elmer Pamisa and a pride of Barangay Carmen, bested Daniel Liagus of Tarlac in the school boys 40 kgs final.

The 14-year-old Illudar, a grade 8 student of Calaanan National High School, defeated John Kevin Jimenez of Cebu City in their school boys 42 kgs final set.

The 5-foot-6 tall Caranagan prevailed over Agusan del Sur’s Mytchel Ivan Leight Kate Pilapil in their junior girls 50 kgs final.

Rhein John Gidor and Cyril’s elder brother Peter John Payla missed the gold to settle each for silver after losing in the finals.

Dave Bryan Caspe, meanwhile, salvaged a bronze on Thursday.

With this development, the Oro boxers of head coach Elmer Pamisa thus earned the title as ‘hakot awards” from few members of the national team and officials, sportswriters and other boxing delegations.

Pamisa’s wards have been used to making waves in the national tournaments.

This year, they also dominated the Philippine National Games and the recent PSC-Pacquiao Amateur Boxing National Championships.

Adding all medals, Team CDO finished with 11 golds, 7 silvers and 8 bronzes in the week-long Batang Pinoy national games.

This surpassed the 8-gold target set by City sports coordinator Jaymar Rivera.

“We passed and all of the sporting events we sent contributed with medals,” said Rivera.

Taekwondo took center stage in the first two days of action with 4 golds, 3 silvers and 4 bronzes.

Table tennis team gave a pair of golds and bronzes, while athletics and badminton teams pulled a silver medal apiece.

Swimming team had two bronze medals.

“We thank City Mayor Oscar Moreno for his continuous support and we hope more supports from him in our next campaigns,” said city sports overseer Rocky Calingin.
