Fernando: Beautiful you

WE ALWAYS have an identity regardless if we do something or not. But since our identity comes hand in hand with the nature of our being, as created by the Ultimate Good, we have a responsibility to develop this personality into something good.

I have written in one of my previous articles that our identity is shaped by several forces which some are out of our control. For instance, the manner of our upbringing lies in the hands our parents and/or families.

Here, we cannot do anything since by the time of our childhood, we do not have the capability to decide for ourselves. This part of identity-shaping is left to luck since we do not have any idea who our parents would be. If we are born to a well-to-do and loving family who takes delight in raising us into God-fearing and responsible individuals, then we are lucky unlike if we are raised into a family who have other priorities other than shaping us into caring persons.

Parents must internalize this great responsibility of raising a beautiful you or beautiful us. I am talking about developing the beauty inside us. That is why parenting is a serious matter because it is not only about making descendants or making our names alive for generations. It is about developing beautiful people who would make this world a better place to live in. With this, I mean that parents or families are responsible in making us loving, caring, and responsible children of the country and God.

Parents’ primary role in raising their children is to provide them with a healthy environment as they grow up. Healthy environment means a surrounding that radiates love and care from people around these children. Children should not be exposed in a toxic environment where swearing and violence are normal occurrences. Parents’ main goal is to bring their children back to the Creator as whole without or with little blemish of sin. This is a very difficult thing to do which makes their responsibility so hefty.

Once our minds reach maturity, the responsibility and accountability of shaping this beautiful you or us are passed mostly but not entirely to us. As mentioned, identity is given no matter if we do something or not. If we do nothing and just wait for our parents to work for us, we create an identity that is akin to being lazy, dependent, selfless, or irresponsible. Identity is our mark. It describes our individuality and uniqueness. The problem in creating a negative kind of identity is the idea of going against our human nature. As human being we are social being and stewards of creations therefore it is our inherent responsibility to create a beautiful us. Failure in this endeavor is equivalent to disobedience to God.

We create a beautiful us when we make good-decision making. It is when we give ourselves better education and when we empower ourselves to overcome temptations and evils. It is listening to the advices of parents, elders, teachers, and spiritual mentors and applying them in our daily lives. It is enhancing our talents and skills to reach our highest potentials so that we reach the best position to help others.

Creating a beautiful us is achieved by getting back to the right path or standing up when we get lost or stumbled on our way. It is not giving up the goodness that lies within us and keeping our faith and hope to God. It is by sharing love and care to our fellows who are in need physically and emotionally.

Identity then is a matter of a task. We are task to form a good identity for ourselves. We cannot just sit down and see the world rotates without doing anything. Indeed, it is not an easy task but we are capable enough to form this beautiful identity because we have intellect and will.

Our parents play a great role in forming this identity and most of the times what they did to raise us leaves an imprint to our individuality that may be too hard to change. Once we are capable to decide for ourselves and see the good from evil, the right from wrong, we must do the best we can, no matter how hard it can be, to develop and radiate the beauty within us. If we can do so, life would be easier for all of us.
