Council approves resolution to establish school’s name

WITH regards to the lack of proper funding and budget of the school, a resolution was passed to establish the name of a local elementary school in Iloilo City.

In the city council’s regular session on September 25, the committee on education chairman Councilor Julie Grace Baronda proposed to change the name of “Uswag San Isidro Elementary School – Judith Lazarraga Tiongco Memorial School.”

Instead, it will be changed to “Uswag San Isidro Elementary School.” The aforementioned school is an extension and dependent on the funds of Judith Lazarraga Tiongco Memorial School.

The school can stand or establish its own name by omitting the extension name and to have its funds appropriated.

Baronda’s proposal was an “endorsement” to Congressman Jerry Treñas’ House Bill No. 8045, known as “An Act establishing an elementary school in Brgy. San Isido, Jaro, Iloilo City, to be known as the Uswag San Isidro Elementary School and appropriating funds thereof.”

“With the establishment or creation of Uswag San Isidro Elementary School, we can and will provide good quality for all our students,” stated on Baronda’s resolution.

In connection to the upcoming election, some councilors questioned the word “Uswag” on the name of the school since it has a “political color.” They recommended the removal of such word as part of the school’s name.

The word is a renowned slogan of Treñas, a running candidate for mayor for the 2019 elections.

“I’m not really after for the name nga Uswag. Kung ano man da ang inyo nga interpretation (No matter what are your interpretations), pero kay ang akon lang ‘bi, it was approved by the City Council six years ago and without political intention man ang aton (our) mga school principal for facilitating the document,” Baronda said.

After the long rebuttals, the resolution was approved wherein, there were eight councilors voted for the proposed name. They are Jay Treñas, Ely Estante, Liezl Joy Zulueta-Salazar, Candice Magdalane Tupas, Irene Ong, Mandrie Malabor, and Leila Luntao.
