Leganes town allowed to dump waste in the city

THE Iloilo City Council passed a resolution allowing the municipality of Leganes to dump waste on the sanitary landfill located at the Barangay Calajunan in the district of Mandurriao.

Proposed by Councilor R Leone Gerochi, the resolution authorizes Mayor Jose Espinosa III to sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) together with the local government unit of Leganes.

Previously, the municipality of Leganes has already violated the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 in which, the town has been throwing garbage in an exposed dumpsite.

During the discussion of the resolution, Councilor Plaridel Nava objected for numerous causes. This includes the lack of compliance to the solid waste management act and waste segregation related laws citing the provision in the MOA.

Nava also wants to assure the capability of the city in handling its garbage before receiving the garbage from other municipalities.

He said it is probable “precedence” if other towns will throw their garbage in the city.

With Nava’s statement, Gerochi suggested to add provisions in the MOA.

“In the dumping of residual waste in the landfill, the second party (Leganes) shall observe all pertinent legal and applicable laws for the proper and legal disposal of solid waste in the said landfill,” said Gerochi, council’s chairman on public services, environmental protection and ecology.
