WHEN IAM 98 cagers reunited with two of their best starters, Mike Daming had his own way to contribute something.

The 36-year-old Daming, one of IAM 98’s reliable guards, came out from the shelf and scored a buzzer beater as the 98ers defeat the St. Peter Faber Cup’s reigning champion XUHS 2001,58-56 in their second encounter of the 8th XUHS-ABA Basketball League here on Friday at the XUHS Pueblo covered courts.

Cyril Chiva and Emilio “The General” Callelero showed up to their teammates’ great delight as they finished with 16 and 12 points each to lead the 98ers.

It was, however, the troika of Chiva, Daming and Abelou “Mr. T” Sanchez that erased Batch 2001’s 14-point lead in the tumultuous fourth quarter.

From a 56-all deadlock in the last 30 seconds, Alfredo Onico gave the 98ers a shiver after he lost control of the ball.

When Alumni 2001 opted to consume the remaining seconds after a steal that led to overtime, Onico got the chance to make up for his costly turnover.

Defending hard, Onico was able to tap the ball from 2001’s possession and saw Chiva from near for the pick that set the tone for Daming’s winning shot off fastbreak play in the last 6 seconds of play.

“We just kept our composure inch by inch and luckily IAM 98 was rewarded with a sweet win,” said team manager John Viktor Ocampo.

It was IAM 98’s second straight win against 2001 this season with a win by forfeiture in their first game.

“We deserved a nice cold beer for the win and it is good to be home for a while,” said Callero, who came home from Manila for a vacation along with Chiva.
