Carvajal: Seagulls

A READER wrote in to join me in my indignation at (Juan Ponce Enrile) JPE’s and (BongBong Marcos) BBM’s lies about Martial Law. He asked in exasperation: “Where is the outcry from historians and media?” I write to join him in his exasperation at the nation’s whimper of a response to JPE’s and BBM’s sneering lies.

I can understand historians not making an outcry. Scholars are generally an unemotional lot. But as big and insulting as the lie was they should have challenged JPE and BBM with the historical truth.

What is beyond comprehension is the silence of mainstream media. Acknowledged haters of fake news and self-proclaimed voice of obscure folks, they spectacularly failed to challenge JPE’s and BBM’s blatantly false claims.

My own question: where are the guardians of morality, the Catholic bishops and clergy? Why are they so brave to protest, by of all means praying over creative liar Trillanes, against Duterte’s “looming” dictatorship yet do not lift a moral finger against the outright lies of the son of an “actual” dictator?

This is not moral amnesia but more like a case of a distorted national sense of values. One more proof of this is Imee Marcos’ being inside the magic circle of possible winners in the coming election, the same Imee who asks us to move on without her family’s apology to a violated people.

It now appears we are the problem not the oligarchs. We are so stupid as to elect criminals and plunderers into office. People are so short-sighted as to keep electing them for P500 even as they go back to a life of misery the day after.

Why can we not work out what really happened during Martial Law? Why can we not decide once and for all who was guilty of what during those dark years so they could face the consequences among which is being banned forever from holding public office? Then, only then can we and should we as a nation move on.

Unfortunately the chance of that happening ranges from slim to nil. Imee becoming a senator is a foregone conclusion, thanks to our stupidity. Thanks to the same stupidity, BBM might yet become president. Only in the Philippines!

We have to stop selling our dignity and self-respect for P500. Otherwise we are not proud lions but scavenging seagulls that swarm around trawlers because they know they can feed on the small fishes trawlers reject and throw back into the sea.

Unless we change this mendicant and sycophant attitude, the trawler operators (criminal politicians we fawn on for life-support) will only be happy to keep throwing little fishes to us so we will leave them alone to feast on their bigger catch.

There now remains the billion-peso question of how change from sycophant seagulls into self-respecting lions.
