Evacuees suffer fever, flu in gov’t shelters

AROUND 30 people living in evacuation centers in the City of Naga, Cebu, have been suffering from respiratory diseases, officials of the Department of Health (DOH) 7 said yesterday.

DOH 7 officials are distributing medicines to the victims and making sure other evacuees will not be affected, said Dr. Jaime Bernadas, DOH 7 director.

Bernadas told SunStar Cebu that during his visit to the 11 evacuation centers in the City of Naga, he found that some of the evacuees are suffering from flu, fever and cough.

Niesly Alvarado, 32, an evacuee from Sitio Sindulan, said she had fever while staying at the Enan Chiong Activity Center (ECAC) since the first day of the landslide.

Alvarado said that Alvarado’s 12-year-old niece, Venice Ayanna Grace Alvarado, also suffered from a flu while in evacuation but recovered two days later.

Alvarado said the DOH gave them medicines and monitored them regularly.

Bernadas said that aside from respiratory diseases, diarrhea is also common among the evacuees.

But this has been slowly eradicated following the intervention of health and sanitation teams assigned in the 11 evacuation centers in the city. JKV
