THE University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters and the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors split the overall titles in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) track and field competition, which wrapped up yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

In the college level, the Webmasters won the overall title in the men’s division, while the Warriors captured the overall crown in the women’s division.

UC finished the two-day tournament with nine gold medals, nine silver medals and six bronze medals to retain the men’s title. USC finished at second place with four gold medals, one silver and six bronzes, while the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Panthers were at third with two golds, five silvers and three bronzes.

The Warriors took the women’s overall crown after garnering eight gold medals, seven silvers and four bronzes. USP-F settled for second place with five golds, four silvers and six bronzes, and UC placed third with three golds, five silvers and four bronzes.

“Most of our players in the women’s division are new but despite that, they delivered for the team. I’m happy with the performance,” USC’s head coach Arvin Loberanis told SunStar Cebu.

“We had good entries in the men’s division, but we just lack athletes in the women’s division. It was overall a good performance from our athletes,” said UC’s athletic director Jessica Honoridez in a separate interview.

It was the same scenario in the secondary level as the two schools also split the titles. The USC-Basic Education Department walked away with the boys’ overall title, while UC snatched the girls’ overall crown.

USC-Bed garnered 11 gold medals, nine silvers and three bronzes to run away with the crown in the boys’ division. UC was the closest foe with three golds, four silvers and five bronzes. The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles finished third with one gold, two silvers and four bronzes.

The Webmasters girls’ team, meanwhile, came up with six gold medals, eight silvers and two bronzes to steal the girls’ overall title from USC-Bed, which finished second with four gold medals, three silvers, and eight bronzes.

SHS-AdC settled for third place with four golds, two silvers and four bronzes.

“I know that the athletes will perform because I trust the coaching staff. I know they have been working well. We also keep on motivating the students to step up and come up with the best game. Motivation from the coaches is really a big factor,” said Honoridez.

In some of yesterday’s results, Benjamin Reynes of UC and Marites Falcutila of USP-F emerged as the fastest runners after topping the men’s and women’s 100-meter dash, respectively.

Reynes timed 11.26 seconds to beat Mike Laurence Lopez of UC and Elthan Ratilla of USP-F, who clocked 11.28 and 11.49, respectively.

Falcutila won the women’s division in 13.25, beating USC’s Jelly Mae Paderes (13.50) and UC’s Adreanna Emmanuelle Ralos (13.87).

In the secondary division, UC won the girls’ 4x100m relay in 53.38, outlasting USC-Bed (53.40) and SHS-AdC (1:01.53). USC-Bed (44.85) topped the boys’ 4x100m relay over UC-Main (45.72) and guest school Sisters of Mary-Boystown (46.44). (RSC)
