‘Search for Most Child-Friendly Police Station’ launched in Oro

THE Oro Youth Development Council (OYDC) has relaunched on Monday, October 1, its annual “Search for Most Child-Friendly Police Station,” a youth-led social audit of police stations, which is now on its fourth year.

Al Rashide Galaura, child protection officer of Oro Youth Development Council said this year's search is exciting with more organizations joining their cause.

The OYDC's new partners include the Ayala Foundation, Inc. CDO, Department of Education - Division of Cagayan de Oro, Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines Inc. CDO Chapter, and Sangguniang Kabataan CDO.

Galaura said the city is indeed becoming a child-friendly city with its child-friendly programs such as the smoking ban and the regulation of plastic use.

This year's theme is "Kapulisan Kanunay nga Magprotektar sa Katungod sa Kabataan," he said, as the youth believes that police officers are not just there to serve and protect the people but should also be frontliners in upholding and promoting the rights of the children.

In the past 3 years, Police Station 3 or the Agora Police Station is the consistent winner of the Search.

The search shall cover 3 phases, namely: Police Station Evaluation Criteria, Community-Based Evaluation and Final Presentation. The criteria for the search include policy-related compliance with child-related laws, personnel training and manning, child appropriate services, monitoring, evaluation and research, and information and advocacy (child and community engagement).

The top police station will receive P100,000, P70,000.00 for the 2nd prize while 3rd prize gets P50,000.00.

City Administrator Teddy Sabuga-a said this competition is the first of its kind in this country, pointing out that Davao and Baguio City has bench-marked this program to replicate it to their own locality.

"We of course provided the plan because we want all cities in the country to be child-friendly. Muabot unta ang panahon bisan asa muadto ang kapulisan, duulan sila sa atong kabataan (We hope for time to come where our youth will no longer hesitate to approach our police personnel)," he said.

The search would cover policy related areas such that whether a police station is compliant with child related laws, physical facilities, training of police officers, services, monitoring evaluation and research, and information and advocacy.
