Cebuanos bag golds in national meet

GLEN Lava-mentored University of San Carlos (USC), St. Cecilia’s College (SCC) and Exceed Learning Center (ELC) bagged a total of 10 medals in the 2018 National Inter-School Taekwondo Championships at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila last weekend.

The three schools from Cebu won four gold medals, five silver medals and a bronze medal.

Kirk Gonzalez of SCC and Edison Libor of ELC won gold medals in their respective individual poomsae events. SCC’s Troy Cuyos and ELC’s Hanifah Oswa won the two other gold medals, this time in the kyurogi event or sparring.

Oswa also won a silver medal in the individual poomsae along with USC’s Alyssa Llenes.

Llenes teamed up with fellow Carolinians Francis Arquero and Silver Micah Torres to win a silver medal in the Junior Team category in poomsae.

SCC’s Cuyos, Niño Cabanig and Kim Carcueva snagged the bronze in the Grade School Team category in poomsae.

SCC’s Kyla Monteron and Gonzalez won silver medals in the kyorugi event.

Lava is one of the best poomsae athletes in the country. He’s a three-time world champion in the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. He won it in 2013 in Indonesia, in 2014 in Mexico and in 2016 in Peru.

Lava has been named to the Philippine National Taekwondo team, along with his students Arquero and Llenes, and will compete in the 2018 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships next month in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei. (EKA)
