Corpus Christi, City Central rule Mindanao Little Olympics

PERENNIAL champion Corpus Christi School handily won the secondary crown of the just-held 22nd Milo Little Olympics Mindanao leg in Cagayan de Oro City, via huge margin over runner-up Zamboanga Sports Academy.

With sweeping victories in basketball and chess and strong showing in other sports disciplines, the wards of Dr. Alfonso del Fierro piled up an insurmountable 112 points that left their rivals in striking distance.

However, the valiant Knights could not repeat as overall champions in both categories after losing the elementary title to City Central School in heart-breaking manner.

City Central School edged Corpus Christi Grade School by just a hairline difference, 112-111.

“Permiro ilang evaluate 4 points ang difference, pero pag review namo one point ra gayud ang biya. Pero lipay ra sab si doc (del Fierro) kay in the name of sportsmanship lipay man sab ang uban,” said Corpus Christi School sports coordinator Eric Miguel.

The official results will be revealed in time for the awarding ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, at the Limketkai Mall.

While retaining the title in scrabble, the City Central School Stingers made a big surprise by winning the marbles in elementary boys chess competition.

“Chess is the newest addition that pulled us to the top,” said City Central principal Alma Sheila Alorro, who is in-charge for the school’s sports program.

Events in karatedo, taekwondo and table tennis also contributed a lot to City Central’s successful campaign in the Mindanao-wide Milo Little Olympics.

The Stingers first won the elementary championship in 2015.

“Wala ta’y mahimo nga ni-champion kami,” Alorro said of the elementary rivalry lorded it over by Corpus Christi last year at the expense of second-placer Maramag Elementary School by slim margin, 88.5 points to 85 points.

For the first time in 22 years, the Milo Little Olympics will be having the awards rites without its undisputed Mindanao leg organizer Megdonio Llamera who passed away at the age of 84 right after the multifarious meet’s opening ceremony at Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center. (With LLS)
