Prince Warehouse Club to sell NFA rice

NATIONAL Food Authority (NFA) rice will soon be available at Prince Warehouse Club branches here in Cebu, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 7.

This, after the DTI and the NFA signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Philippine Amalgamated Supermarkets Association (Pagasa) for member-supermarkets to stock up their shelves with NFA rice last Sept. 19.

“These supermarkets can sell NFA rice now. They will be allowed to do retail on NFA rice, to make it available in their shelves and we have a good number (of Prince Warehouse Clubs) in Cebu,” said DTI 7 Director Asteria Caberte.

Consumers can buy NFA rice in Prince Warehouse branches in the cities of Cebu, Danao and Mandaue; and in the towns of Argao, Daanbantayan, Dalaguete, Minglanilla, Sibonga and Tuburan.

Caberte said they will check if member-supermarkets have been supplied with NFA rice.

Purchase limit

“We will do our own monitoring also if these supermarkets are given allocation for retail,” she said.

Caberte said that as long as the supermarket is a member of Pagasa, it will be authorized to sell NFA rice.

In an earlier interview, NFA 7 spokesperson Olma Bayno said that they had 440,000 bags of rice in their warehouses in Central Visayas, as of Sept. 23.

Consumers can buy up to two bags, or four kilos, of NFA rice in participating supermarkets at P27 per kilo.

NFA 7, which has 300 accredited retail outlets in the region, was also urged to speed up its accreditation process so more outlets can sell cheap rice.

This will ease the pressure on the market as the public clamors for lower rice prices, Caberte said.

The DTI 7, along with other agencies, agreed to convene regularly for a Local Price Coordinating Council meeting with Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III to monitor prices and to go after establishments that overprice. (JOB)
